Parentstasis

A relational-developmental mismatch in which parenting roles, authority, expectations, or ways of relating fail to update as the child, parent, and relationship develop.

Example

A parent continues expecting their approval to be required for an adult child’s decisions, even though the adult has developed the capacity and responsibility to make those decisions on their own. The adult child’s life has changed, but the expectations of the parent have not updated with it.
